While no one wants to drive around with an accumulation of dried on their hoods, grilles, windshields, and side mirrors, cleaning bugs off your vehicle requires more than a quick car wash. The following are a few steps to help you remove bug splatters without causing damage to your paint job:

  1. Select Bug Remover: There are several different types of cleaners to choose from which are effective for cleaning bugs and stains from your vehicle. Make sure to read the label when selecting a professional cleaning product to determine whether it is a concentrate that needs to be diluted.

  2. Remove Bug Splatters: Ideally you should clean your vehicle as soon as the bug splatter appears to minimize the time it has to dry and harden, making it more difficult to remove.

    • Materials Needed - Bug remover, hose, microfiber towel/bug sponge, bucket, and spray bottle

    • Step 1 - Soak bug-stained areas with cleaning product. Dampening a towel with cleaning product and laying it over the affected area for several minutes is an effective way to let the cleaning product soak onto the stained areas

    • Step 2 - Whether using a microfiber towel or bug sponge, after you’ve applied your cleaner, firmly wipe away all of the bug splatter on your car. If some bugs are not coming off easily, ou may consider applying more cleaning product and letting it sit for another minute to make cleaning easier. When cleaning the windshield, don’t use an oil-based product that will leave residue on the glass.

  3. Wash Your Car: After bugs are remove, give your vehicle a good wash to remove any remaining cleaning product residue and you can be sure all splatter has been removed.

    • Materials Needed - Bucket, car cleaning product, sponge, and towel

  4. Apply Car Wax: Applying wax will make it easier bug splatter in future. The wax coating is easy to clean off and prevents the bugs from hardening directly on the surface of the car. Wipe or spray car wax solution on the front of the car. A water repellent solution may be used for the windshield and other glass areas, like the sideview mirrors. Be sure to wipe the wax evenly across the surface of your car.
